SECRETS OF COUNTER-ESPIONAGE (1947) Pavel Kadochnikov, Amvrosi Buchma, Sergey Martinson, Viktor Dobrovolsky, Dmitri Milyutenko. A Soviet agent is air-dropped into Nazi occupied territory. He takes the disguise of a German entrepreneur wishing to take advantage of slave labor in occupied Ukraine and soon strikes a partnership with another German businessman who's son is a high ranking Nazi. Together they go to Ukraine on a path that leads to great intrigue and suspense. There is an amazing scene where a prisoner is given ten steps by a Nazi officer before he shoots him in the back—unless of course, he gives the officer the names of his co-conspirators. It’s riveting. There are many other great moments of suspense. This Russian-made WWII spy movie glorifies the Russian secret service, yet it really doesn’t come off like a typical propaganda-laden communist love-fest. It’s a great film with fine acting and brilliant B&W cinematography, embellished by some wonderful sets. Definitely worth a look. In Russian with English subtitles. Aka: Secret Agent. From 16mm.
