It’s a wonderful, nearly forgotten pulp science fiction-weird menace tale featuring a sadistic mad scientist and a plethora of monstrous beasts, all victimizing a hero and his often naked heroine companion. It is a story much in the same vein as Henry Kuttner’s marvelous (pun intended) “The Time Trap,” which had appeared in an earlier Marvel publication in 1938. The second novel, “The Impossibles,” is by two well-known veteran science fiction writers, Randall Garrett and Laurence M. Janifer. First, late-model automobiles began driving themselves…with nobody behind the wheel! Then, valuables began vanishing into thin air from within the supposed safety of locked rooms… It was a new kind of crime for sure; and Malone, the Government’s expert on “impossibilities,” was afraid it meant they were also dealing with a new kind of criminal…one who could disappear at will, walk through walls, and thumb his nose at the police.
