(1962) Kyôko Enami, Shiho Fujimura, Kôji Fujiyama, Kôjirô Hongô, Shintarô Katsu, Takashi Shimura. This film could almost be in our fantasy or horror sections. Once a year a small Japanese fishing village is terrorized by a gigantic whale, which has taken the lives of many of the villagers. The whale is twice the size of a normal whale and is seemingly invincible in an almost supernatural sense. The head of the village offers his beautiful daughter in marriage to the man who can kill the beast. There evolves a competition between two of the fisherman for this honor. This is a sprawling Japanese adventure epic that, to its credit, also develops a wonderful sub-plot between the two fishermen and the women they love. The whale special effects are excellent for the day and the scenes of fishing boats circling the mighty beast are very thrilling indeed. Way cool! Widescreen, 35mm.
