THE DEVIL HORSE (1925, Roach) Yakima Canutt, Gladys Morrow, Robert Kortman. A great cowboys and Indians movie! When he is young, Yak’s family is killed by Indians, though he escapes. His colt, Rex, also escapes, but grows in the wild with an intense hatred for Indians. Years later, a new terror sweeps the Indian Tribes. The supernatural fear of a Devil horse--a demon with killing hoofs. Eventually Rex and Yak are reunited and help stop a bloody Indian uprising. Great battle scenes! Kortman gives a deliciously evil portrayal as Prowling Wolf. Recommended. Music score, 16mm.
THE IRON RIDER (1926, Goodwill) Yakima Canutt, Villa Vale, Elsie Benham. There’s this gal Yak wants to marry. He hits the gambling table to try and raise money for a nest egg. The fur flies when a crooked gambler cheats him out of his horse! Yak does some great stunt work and trick riding. 16mm.
THE OUTLAW BREAKER (1926, Goodwill) Yakima Canutt, Nelson McDowell, Harry Northrup, Alma Rayford. Yak’s a cattleman. Yak’s gal is the daughter of a hated sheepherder who ends up shot in the back. Yak is blamed for the killing! Who’s really guilty? This is an enjoyable western that features a scruffy McDowell as Yak’s sidekick. Watch for a great fight scene at the top of the film. Music score, 16mm.
CANYON HAWKS (1930, Big 4) Yakima Canutt, Wally Wales, Buzz Barton, Rene Borden. This is the closest that Yak ever came to playing a lead, hero role in a talkie B western. Yak comes to the aid of some embattled sheepherders. Long thought to be lost, our master was taken from a rare 16mm print, which--years ago--was professionally edited down to around 40 minutes.
