THE LAW COMMANDS (1937, Crescent) Tom Keene, Bud Buster, Lorraine Hayes, Robert Fiske, John Merton. An enjoyable entry in Keene’s “historical” western series made by Crescent. Homesteaders are being slaughtered left and right by swarms of cutthroat nightriders, led by ringleader Merton. Tom is a special deputy appointed to track down the killers and restore order. Who is the powerful man behind the murdering riders? Tom almost loses his life trying to find out. Great fun. 35mm.
DRUMS OF DESTINY (1937, Crescent) Tom Keene, Edna Lawrence, Budd Buster, Dave Sharpe. It’s the early 1800s. Renegade bands of Indians in Spanish Florida spill over the border and attack American settlers. Against orders, Tom leads his cavalry unit over the border to smash the renegades. 16mm.
THE PAINTED TRAIL (1938, Monogram) Tom Keene, Eleanor Stewart, LeRoy Mason. This film marked the reunion between Keene and director Robert Hill, who had directed some of Tom’s best early westerns. In this solid outing, Tom plays a lawdog on the trail of a ruthless gang of smugglers. A terrific climax features a shootout between hero and villain, each standing on opposite sides of the border. 16mm.
DYNAMITE CANYON (1941, Monogram) Tom Keene, Evelyn Finley, Sugar Dawn, Kenne Duncan, Lloyd Andrews. Tom plays a U.S. ranger disguised as a desperado. He joins a gang of outlaws responsible for the murder of a rancher and finds his life on the line in this lively Monogram western. From 16mm.
