BOOTS AND SADDLES (1937, Republic) Gene Autry, Smiley Burnette, Judith Allen. Gene and Smiley try to help their new young boss (who inherited the ranch from his dad) obtain a lucrative contract from the Army for breaking horses. In competition with them is a scheming rancher. A terrific climax features a horse race between Gene and the rancher, with the winner getting the contract! From 35mm.
MAN FROM MUSIC MOUNTAIN (1938, Republic) Gene Autry, Smiley Burnette, Carol Hughes. A shifty banker is selling ghost town lots to unsuspecting citizens. Gene gets wind of it and pulls out his six-guns. Look out! Some striking shots of Hoover Dam being put into service. Like most of Gene’s ‘30s Republic films, this is a really fine B western, and we most definitely recommend it. 16mm.
THE OLD CORRAL (1938, Republic) Gene Autry, Smiley Burnette, Hope Manning, Lon Chaney, Jr. A nightclub singer sees her boss murdered by a gangster. She flees the bright lights of Chicago and heads out west. The gang follows. Gene and Smiley protect her with their usual western heroics. 16mm.
RIDERS OF THE WHISTLING PINES (1948, Columbia) Gene Autry, Patricia White, Jimmy Lloyd. Gene’s held responsible when a ranger is accidentally shot. However, he was actually slain by the hit-man of a corrupt timber official who is out to prevent his moth-infested trees from being sprayed with DDT, which ruins timber. He overdoses the area with DDT, causing animal deaths and rallying locals against Gene’s spraying efforts. A unique plot helps this fine Autry western. 35mm.
