Westerns B WESTERN COLLECTIONS, ROY ROGERS, Vol. 4

THE ARIZONA KID (1939, Republic) Roy Rogers, Gabby Hayes, Sally March.  A superior Rogers opus about a cowboy who returns home to sell horses and visit with old friends.  There he finds the town troubled by talk of war between North and South.  He also finds that his boyhood pal is part of a gang of thugs disguised as confederate soldiers.  From 16mm.

FRONTIER PONY EXPRESS (1939, Republic) Roy Rogers, Mary Hart, Raymond Hatton, Monte Blue.  Roy’s an express rider investigating the crooked schemes of a corrupt senator who’s using an outlaw gang to help build an empire for himself.  Roy and his fellow express riders put the whammy on the good senator’s plans.  Like all of Roy’s pictures from this period:  slick and entertaining.  16mm.

SILVER SPURS (1943, Republic) Roy Rogers, Smiley Burnette, John Carradine, Phyllis Brooks, Jerome Cowan.  A ruthless swindler murders Roy’s ex-boss.  Roy ends up getting the blame!  Look for a really rousing shootout at the finale of this slick Rogers Republic production.  Carradine is greatIn this very likable Rogers western.  Recommended.  From 16mm.

LIGHTS OF OLD SANTA FE (1944, Republic) Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, Gabby Hayes, Richard Powers (Tom Keene).  Uncut!  Roy is part of a rodeo troupe competing with another troupe headed by smooth-talking Keene (Richard Powers in the credits) who burns them out and runs off their stock!  If cowboy songs are your cup of tea then you’ll be in heaven, ‘cause there’s a million of ‘em in this movie.  Watch for the nifty chariot racing scene.  From 35mm.
