HARD HOMBRE (1931 Allied) Hoot Gibson, Lina Basquette, Mathilde Comont. A great Gibson film with Hoot as Peaceful Patton, a passive fellow who is mistaken for a tough outlaw. Hoot takes advantage of this and pretends to be the “hard hombre,” using his reputation to force local ranchers to clear up some land disputes. Things go well until Hoot’s battleaxe mom shows up. Hoot’s western humor once again shines through. 16mm.
THE DUDE BANDIT (1933, Allied) Hoot Gibson, Gloria Shea, Hooper Atchley, Skeeter Robbins. Hoot is shocked when a pal is murdered in cold blood! He discovers a crooked banker is behind the killing so he dons the disguise of a bandit in order to entrap him. A most likable Gibson western. Watch for the early scenes where Hoot pretends to be a dimwitted cowpoke. 16mm.
THE FIGHTING PARSON (1933, Allied) Hoot Gibson, Marceline Day, Charlie King, Bill Robbins. Hoot’s on the lam for playing craps with loaded dice. He stumbles upon the clothes and ID papers of a parson and assumes the holy man’s identity. Hoot hits town before a hanging, but sways the townsfolk to forgive the outlaw and let him go--He will be responsible for him. Actually, the outlaw knows Hoot’s identity and threatens to blow his cover unless he saves him! An amusing Gibson film. The scene where King forces the real parson to disrobe at gunpoint is pretty hilarious. From 35mm.
SWIFTY (1936, Diversion/Grand National) Hoot Gibson, June Gale, Gabby Hayes, Wally Wales. One of Hoot's better westerns. He plays Swifty Wade, a cowboy in search of a job in Sweetwater country. He comes upon the owner of a large ranch just moments before the man is killed in an ambush. He gets blamed and almost gets lynched. Later, he sets out to clear himself and catch the real killer. 35mm.
