(1934) Cedric Hardwicke, Conrad Veidt, Mary Ellis, John Stuart, Jeanne Stuart. This is a very engaging murder drama. Mary Ellis is a proper British wife who’s fallen under the spell of a suave yet unscrupulous Egyptian, wonderfully portrayed by Veidt. Desiring to be free of the man she no longer loves, Ellis and Veidt plot to slowly poison her husband. However, Hardwicke stumbles onto the plot and attempts to save the husband (his old pal, John Stuart) from their sinister plans. This film, though a little wordy at times, has a nice exotic feel to it. The final scene when the closing doors shut out Ellis is quite memorable. NOTE: Our video master comes from a foreign source and is a little softer than our usual quality, though still quite watchable. In English with Czech subtitles. From 16mm.
