SONG OF THE GRINGO (1936, First National) Tex Ritter, Joan Woodbury, Monte Blue, Fuzzy Knight, Ted Adams. This is it, the first starring film for Tex Ritter. Tex infiltrates a gang of thugs and eventually winds up being accused of murder. Watch for the terrific courtroom shoot-out at the film’s climax. Tex sings some pretty good tunes, too. From 16mm.
HITTIN’ THE TRAIL (1937, Grand National) Tex Ritter, Jerry Bergh, Tommy Bupp, Earl Dwire. Tex becomes innocently involved with a gang of rustlers and is shocked when he is arrested. In order to prove his innocence, he sets out to track them down. Okay Ritter entry with some good songs, including the memorable “Blood on the Saddle.” From 16mm.
MYSTERY OF THE HOODED HORSEMEN (1938, Grand National) Tex Ritter, Iris Meredith, Horace Murphy, Charlie King, Forrest Taylor. Some feel that this is Ritter’s best western for Grand National. It’s a spirited adventure featuring a gang of hooded killers who terrorize the local citizenry. Tex and his pal, Stubby, intervene when the gang kills a local rancher and raids his gold mine. 16mm.
TAKE ME BACK TO OKLAHOMA (1940, Monogram, From 35mm) Tex Ritter, Slim Andrews, Terry Walker, Karl Hackett. Tex gets a call for help from a friend whose stage line is on the verge of being taken over by a shady character and his gang of ruffians. When Tex arrives, he ends up being framed for robbery! A climatic race will decide who gets the stage-run. A very likable Ritter Monogram.
