DESERT GOLD (1936, Paramount) Buster Crabbe, Bob Cummings, Marsha Hunt, Tom Keene. Buster is an Indian schooled in the white man’s ways. He falls victim to kidnappers who try to force him to reveal the location of a secret gold mine up in the Superstition Mountains. Beaucoup action follows. 16mm.
OATH OF VENGEANCE (1944, PRC) Buster Crabbe, Al St. John, Kermit Maynard, Mady Lawrence, Charlie King. Buster helps a cowpoke framed for murder. Fuzzy, as usual, supplies the laughs. Look for Kermit Maynard in a small role. Buster was probably the most athletic of all B western stars. 16mm.
WILD HORSE PHANTOM (1944, PRC, from 35mm) Buster Crabbe, Fuzzy St. John, Kermit Maynard. Buster and Fuzzy trail criminals in hopes of finding stolen loot. They’re led to the eerie Wild Horse Mine, which is haunted by a weird phantom. They trail the crooks inside, but are captured when Fuzzy goes bonkers after hearing the maniacal laugh of the phantom. Later, after freeing themselves, Fuzzy is attacked by the Devil Bat. No, we’re not kidding, this is the same prop used in THE DEVIL BAT three years earlier. It even emits the same barking screeches when it attacks. This likable western smacks of an A&C horror comedy with Fuzzy at the top of his form. Recommended.
THE DRIFTER (1944, PRC) Buster Crabbe, Al St. John, Kermit Maynard, Carol Parker. Buster is fine in a good guy-bad guy dual role. The good guy’s a Robin Hood-type riding the range and helping others. Bad Buster is a wayward bank thief who cashes in on good Buster’s reputation. A fine little PRC. 16mm.
