RADIO RANCH (1935, Mascot) Gene Autry, Wheeler Oakman, Betsy Ross, Smiley Burnette. This is the campy, yet very enjoyable feature version of the classic Mascot serial, The Phantom Empire. Released simultaneously, it was in some ways bigger than the original serial itself. Gene and his pals discover the weird underground city of Murania. A campy blend of sci-fi and western thrills. Love those tin can robots. From a superb 16mm print.
PUBLIC COWBOY NO. 1 (1937, Republic, From 35mm) Gene Autry, Smiley Burnette, Ann Rutherford. It’s Gene and Smiley up against a ruthless gang of rustlers. This “modern” western has airplanes, short wave radios, and refrigerator trucks, yet there’s still plenty of blazin’ six-guns.
RED RIVER VALLEY (1936, Republic, UNCUT) Gene Autry, Smiley Burnette, Frances Gran. At nearly 57 min., it’s the longest video version of this Autry classic available. Gene is after the saboteurs of a huge dam project. The water linemen are being blown to smithereens! Most of Gene’s Republic B’s from the ‘30s are classics; this is no exception. An absolute must. 16mm.
GIT ALONG LITTLE DOGIES (1937, Republic) Gene Autry, Smiley Burnette, Judith Allen, William Farnum, Weldon Heyburn. Oil drillers are at odds with cattlemen over rangeland rights. Gene is called in to clear things up and falls for the local banker’s daughter. Lots of songs blended with some great action sequences in this pleasant Autry B western. From 16mm.
