COME ON RANGERS (1938, Republic) Roy Rogers, Mary Hart, Ray Hatton, Harry Woods, J. Farrell MacDonald. A great Rogers film!. Texas Ranger Roy learns the Rangers have been disbanded. He joins the Cavalry, but is dismayed by the rise of an illegal protection racket run by crooked politicians. Things get worse when Roy’s brother is murdered! A helluva western. 16mm.
BILLY THE KID RETURNS (1938, Republic) Roy Rogers, Smiley Burnette, Lynn Roberts, Morgan Wallace, Fred Kohler. Roy has two roles. As Billy, he is shot and killed by Pat Garrett. But as Roy himself, he’s a lawdog who impersonates the dead desperado and tries to help homesteaders against corrupt cattlemen. Roy’s early films are all very good, with a greater focus on action. From 16mm.
UTAH (1945, Republic, UNCUT) Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, Gabby Hayes, Grant Withers. Considered one of Roy’s finest. Dale’s a city gal who wants to sell the family ranch. Roy does his best to dissuade her. Withers is out to grab the deed! Nice mix of action, comedy, and songs. Even if you’re not big on songs, you’ll enjoy some great tunes by the Sons of the Pioneers. 16mm.
HOME IN OKLAHOMA (1946, Republic, UNCUT) Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, Gabby Hayes, Carol Hughes. A great western murder mystery with Roy trying to protect the young heir to a big cattle ranch. The ranch’s owner died recently in an accident (or was it murder?) Hughes is a vicious female killer who ruthlessly back-shoots one of her crime pals and takes several shots at a boy! Refreshing to see Evans in a non-sweet role as a conniving reporter. A must. 16mm.
