(1963) Pierre Brice, Daniele Vargas, Hélène Chanel, Massimo Serato, directed by Umberto Lenzi. This great Euro-adventure thriller is set in 17th Century Spain. A mysterious masked daredevil sets out to defend the local citizens from their evil ruler, who just happens to be the daredevil’s stepfather. This is a very well-done Italian-French period costume piece that’s essentially a retelling of the Zorro legend. Pierre Brice stars as Don Diego, who makes a series of daring raids on his tyrannical stepfather's troops. Before long he manages to incite a bloody uprising. There are all kinds of cool action sequences and plenty of court intrigue. Director Lenzi went on to make some memorable horror films. Widescreen, beautiful color, from 35mm.
