(1953) Atif Kaptan, Annie Ball, Cahit Irgat, Ayfer Feray. This obscure Turkish horror film marked the first screen appearance of Dracula with actual fangs. The film pretty much follows the usual Stoker plotline. The Harker character comes on business to Dracula’s castle. Instead of going to London, the Count heads to Istanbul. The opening castle scenes are quite well-done with gothic sets and nice atmosphere. In fact, it appears that they might have used an actual castle. Kaptan, as Dracula, looks like what Conrad Veidt might have looked like in the role. Our video master came from an overseas source and has some wavy spots in it, but it’s nothing too serious and it’s much better than most of other abysmal video copies that have been around on this title. It appears to have been transferred from a 35mm print. With English subtitles.
