(1949) Chizuru Kitagawa, Takiko Muzunoei, Ryunosuke Tsukigata, Tsuyoshi Sugiyama. This is a fine retelling of the Invisible man story. A scientist uses a strange formula to become invisible. Like the original H.G. Wells story, it has an adverse effect on his mind. Thrown into the mix are jewel thieves who want the formula to help them steal a priceless diamond. The invisibility effects are quite good. Dressed up in an overcoat and bandages, the invisible man looks very much like the Claude Rains version. The scene where he unravels his head bandages is way cool. Watch for another great scene where an invisible cat scares the daylights out of two Japanese women! A real gem in its own way and not to be missed. In Japanese with English subtitles and story-cards. 35mm.
