(1934) Hans Albers, Brigitte Helm, Michael Bohnen, Ernst Kachow, Friedrich Kaybler. This is a great early sci-fi thriller. Albers (The Man Who was Sherlock Holmes) is terrific as the lone survivor of lab experiment for creating gold that was sabotaged by Bohnen, a power-mad industrialist. Much later Bohnen persuades Albers to help him with his own gold experiments in a massive laboratory deep beneath the ocean—a laboratory filled with gigantic equipment and generators. Kenneth Strickfadden would have been pea-green with envy. Albers goes to work in this amazing lab with the ultimate intention of revenge and sabotage. Along the way, though, he is smitten by Bohnen’s daughter, flawlessly portrayed by the beautiful Helm (Metropolis). Much intrigue follows with many twists and turns. The lab scenes in this movie are mind-blowing and the explosive climax is amazing. The B&W cinematography is simply stunning. A must for any serious student of cinematic sci-fi. Wow! English Subtitles. 35mm.
