(1936, Paramount) William Boyd, Jimmy Ellison, Gabby Hayes, Muriel Evans. An excellent early Hopalong Cassidy entry about a stranded teacher who is menaced by a lecherous saloon owner (he’s also behind the theft of the local stage). Boyd and Ellison are soon kidnapped and left to die in the desert. One great scene has Boyd showing Hoppy’s tough, gritty side as he backs down a corrupt sheriff who’s trying to arrest Ellison on a false charge. A must-have. Based on the 1921 novel, The Bar-20 Three. Eye-popping Lone Pine scenery. Wow. From 16mm.
