Sword and Sandal

Sword and Sandal SINS OF ROME

(1954) Massimo Girotti, Ludmilla Cherina, Gianna Maria Canale, directed by Ricardo Freda. A great rendition of the Spartacus legend. Somewhere in Thrace a Roman officer, Spartacus, strikes his superior. He’s tried and condemned to be a slave. He’s brought back to Rome and put into gladiators' school. After escaping, he unites a legion of slaves against the mighty Empire. One of the earliest films in the Italian sword and sandal genre. Freda did a superb job with all aspects: acting, pacing, action scenes, lavish sets, etc. The scene where lions flood the arena is most thrilling. Unlike the Kirk Douglas edition, Spartacus dies on the battlefield in Canale’s arms. The film has a truly wonderful music score. 16mm
