(1937) Hans Albers, Heinz Ruhmann, Marieluise Claudius, Hansi Knoteck, Hilde Weissner. This is a superb mystery-caper-comedy about two down-on-their-luck detectives who pose as Holmes and Watson. They look like them; they dress like them. And even though they never really claim to be them, everyone around them assumes they are the real deal. This leads to a variety of ticklish situations and before they know it, the duo falls into some very real mysteries, eventually capturing a criminal gang and recovering a priceless stamp collection, as well as procuring the charms of two lovely ladies. The film is filled with both serious and comedic moments—all well-played by a marvelous cast. Watch for the scene where Conan Doyle appears in court! The film’s main attribute is Albers, who in his own rugged way, gives a nearly perfect performance as Holmes, a portrayal that makes you wish he could have played the role in other films. Weissner is also wonderful as a beautiful villainess. Rathbone would have loved it. An absolute must for any and all Holmes fans. In German subtitled in English. From 35mm.
