(1934) Ralph Richardson, Ann Todd, Francis L. Sullivan, Claud Allister, Joyce Kennedy. Hugh Drummond’s arch rival, Carl Peterson, is at it again. This time, disguised as a priest, he is trying to stir up illicit arms sales and war-mongering. Drummond and his followers—a group of patriots known as the Black Clan—are out to thwart his sinister plans. Peterson paralyzes Drummond and runs his car into a river but Hugh escapes. After his wife is kidnapped, Hugh ends up in a lonely mansion surrounded by a deadly electric fence and overrun with Peterson’s thugs. Richardson does a great job as Hugh Drummond, but Sullivan nearly steals the show as the heavy-set scoundrel. The climax packs quite a jolt…literally. From 35mm.
