Mystery-Suspense-Film Noir

Mystery FOUL PLAY

(1955) Kataoka Chiezo, Otomo Ryutaro, Okawa Keiko, Sakurmachi Hiroko, Oka Satomi. Perhaps the best B-murder mystery we’ve seen in a long, long time.  During the middle of the Japanese World Series, a player is murdered right on the field.  A flurry of unsavory characters are revealed, any of whom might be the killer.  Only a Charlie Chan-type investigator and his gal-pal seem to know what’s going.  Soon more deaths occur, including another ballplayer and a photographer who dies screaming on a train.  The film has a ‘40s gumshoe film-noir feel to it.  Much of the action takes place on dark streets, smoke-filled nightclubs, and baseball stadiums.  In one riveting scene, two victims are tied to conveyer belts that are slowing moving their wriggling bodies toward spinning buzz saws!  Horrible death is moments away.  Who is the horribly scar-faced brute who seems to always show up at the film’s most intense moments?  If you love gritty murder mysteries, with guys in suits surrounded by gorgeous babes, this is a film you can’t pass up. Wow. In Japanese, subtitled in English. From 16mm.
