(1939, Upgraded 11/16/21) Marius Goring, Penelope Dudley-Ward, Helen Haye, Felix Aylmer, George Merritt, Ronald Shiner. This is a fine old dark house thriller with all the usual elements: The head of an old English family seems to have some dread secret. His servants even seem furtive in nature. Then there's the doctor whose iffy past seems to shielf a secret of his own. What is everyone hiding? Wrapped up in the middle of this, of course, is a beautiful woman who feels surrounded by some sinister threat. The last part of this film is really quite thrilling. Directed by George King with the same flair he gave his Tod Slaughter thrillers. From 35mm.
