(1930, Upgraded 4/3/21) Eric Von Stroheim, Betty Compson, Don Douglas, Marjorie Kane. Strange drama about a crazed ventriloquist and the dummy that exudes a strange hold over him. Von Stroheim is SUCH an SOB. Lots of big staged musicical numbers that reek of nostalgia. A bit creaky, but still v very interesting. You get to see Von Stroheim at his best. The final scene where his name is being taken down from the marquee is very memorable. The opening theme is really snappy. From a beautiful 35mm print.
