(1966) Denholm Elliot, David Buck, Susannah York, Mary Miller, Dudley Jones, Olive MacGreevy, Bernard Archard. This British TV movie of the Poe classic is short and sweet, but very well done with Elliot giving a haunting portrayal as the mysterious Roderick Usher. A strange young woman (Madeleine Usher, Roderick’s mentally unbalanced sister) arrives at the home of a young British gentleman. After her strange disappearance, the young man traces her back to the House of Usher—a strange house filled with mystery, dread, and horror (and also a good share of cobwebs and skeletons!). This is a superb horror film. York is also tops as the insane Madeleine. The scene where she rises from the castle cellar is a great moment indeed. One helluva a movie.
