Horror FERRYMAN MARIA

(1936) Sybille Schmitz, Aribert Mog, Carl de Vogt, Peter Vob.  One night a village ferryman hears the ring of his passenger bell.  When he arrives at the dock, he discovers a darkened figure waiting to cross the black waters.  It is Death, who has come to claim him.  Young Maria comes to the village soon after and takes over the job as the new ferryman, carrying passengers to and fro across the waters. One night Maria gives a ride to a wounded man who is marked by destiny for death. Later, when Death comes to claim his life, she tries to save him.  The scene where Maria dances with death is one of the high points of the movie.  She flees across the darkened countryside into the sanctuary of her church, but to no avail.  With Death at her heals, Maria trudges her way across the swamp to meet her destiny.  A beautiful film and a true classic.  In German with English subtitles.  From 35mm.
