Horror FRANKENSTEIN

(1968) Ian Holm, Sarah Badel, Richard Vernon, Keith Adrian, Frank Barry. A dark, grim, sometimes brutal retelling of the Mary Shelley classic. This obscure Brit made-for-TV film stars Holm as both the demented scientist Frankenstein, as well as the hideously scarred creature he creates in his own image. This monster is far more cunning than its stumbling Universal predecessors—and far more vindictive. Holm, in his pre-Alien days, is brilliant in both parts. Hammer Studios beauty Badel also shines as his bewildered fiancée who has an impending sense of doom because of Holm’s abrupt mood swings. The beheading scene is brutal, yet tastefully done. The monster is brought to life with one bolt of lightning. Intelligent, brooding, and much more faithful to the original novel than most versions. An absolute must.
