Horror GURU, THE MAD MONK

(1974) ) Neil Flanagan, Paul Lieber, Jacqueline Webb, dir. by Andy Milligan. A Z-movie gem. A crazed priest during the middle ages runs a weird church for lost souls. He barbarically executes and tortures villagers, aided by Olga—a vampire—and an ugly hunchback. The execution scenes are ludicrous and call to mind the primitive gore of 2000 Maniacs. Watch the villager who’s dragged to the chopping block in tan levis! When the ax raises, see him lift his head out of the way. Flanagan, as Guru, isn’t bad considering the inane dialogue he’s stuck with. The one-eyed hunchback looks like someone squashed silly putty over one eye. Then, there’s Olga, played by Webb. Somehow her natural repulsiveness fits the surreal badness of this debacle. Color, 35mm
