Drive in Double Features DRIVE-IN DOUBLE FEATURE #153

LABYRINTH (1959) Nadja Tiller, Peter Van Eyck, Nicole Badal, Amedeo Nazarri, Hannah Wieder. Labyrinth is a bizarre, brilliant film about a group of mental misfits in an out-of-this-world sanatorium. Tiller is a famed poet battling alcohol and madness. The moments where she blanks out mentally are effective and most unique. Van Eyck, also an alcoholic, is the handsome artist who keeps her in touch with reality. However the show is almost stolen by Wieder as the beautiful blonde sex kitten who, in addition to being a raving nympho, is also suicidal. The scene where Van Eyck walks into his room and finds her naked on his bed is a highly seductive moment. There are so many brilliant bits in this film we could take up a full page. An absolute must. From 16mm.

AND THE WILD, WILD WOMEN (1960) Anna Magnani, Giulieta Masina. A frightened girl is sent to prison and exposed to prison culture. She befriends everyone from dangerous dames to submissive ladies totally lost in prison life and stuck at the end of the inmate pecking order. Later, she’s released, but she comes back later to visit, only to set off a violent disruption. One moment of pathos involves a certain bathroom being used by inmates to see loved ones on the outside by holding up a mirror at a certain angle. A fascinating look at the grimness of prison life. 16mm.
